Musical Musings: Lanie Lane

Lanie Lane first came to my attention with her track 'What Do I Do', which was used as the theme song for 'Crownies', an Aussie legal drama TV series. Once I found out who she was, she seemed to be popping up all over the place. I had to hear more, and YouTube did not disappoint, introducing me to more of her fabulous music. Then I had to buy her album, and gee, am I glad I did.

'To The Horses' is Lane's self-produced debut album, described on her website as, 'A collection of 11 songs that duck and weave through a heady mix of early rock ‘n’ roll, blues, and rockabilly, serving up fantastic tales of love, lust, heartbreak and the importance of a good guitar.'

My favourite track is '(Oh Well) That's What You Get (Falling in Love with a Cowboy)', which also has a sultry video clip. I also love the quiet beauty of the title track, 'To The Horses' and that fabulous bass line on 'What Do I Do'.

My advice? Watch this woman - she is only just getting started!

Visit Lanie Lane's website here.
'To The Horses' is available here.

Peace on Earth

What a year 2012 has been, and not so much in a positive way. I'm not saying it has all been terrible, but it certainly hasn't been a Mary Poppins sing-along kind of year.

We are, however, almost at the end, so hope is returning that maybe next year will be better.

Here's to a peaceful, merry, exciting, beautiful, bohemian, joyful, lovely, healthy, spicy, sexy, supercalafragilisticexpialadocious-style 2013!
Peace out.

Melancholy

Melancholy (noun): a sad, thoughtful state of mind

For the last couple of days I have been experiencing an intense feeling of melancholy. Disagreement and miscommunication with a family member has prompted me to become introspective and has caused feelings of detachment and distance from my family.

I have been speculating on the source of this feeling of distance. Part of it is, I'm sure, physical distance. I live a good forty-five minute drive away from my family and I don't see them as often as I used to. But part of it is ideological. I've been living my life away from my family for a few years now, and it is surprising to me now how far away my thinking is from the way it was even five years ago. In short, I have grown up and am my own person. I am proud of this, but occasionally I am reminded that in following my own path, I am walking further and further away from the security and comfort of the known.

Melancholy is my friend. This state of mind allows me to draw inward and discover more about the person I have become and am still becoming. There is hurt along the way, to be sure, but there is also growth.

Feline Woman - Charlie

As promised, I'd like to introduce you to our second cat, Charlie.

She is a feisty little ginger kitty, also known as the Ginger Ninja, Ginger Purrs and Little Ginge. She has several jobs around the house. She is a printer...

...an office hand...

...and a book keeper.

She is a very good sleeper, often choosing to sleep curled up in an adorable ball...

... a position that she finds comfortable on any surface.

She is one sweet little girl, and I love her dearly.

Feline Woman - Xanthi

Ok. I admit it. I am nuts about my cats. And yes, I know that not everyone is as nuts about cats in general or my cats in particular as I am, but I don't care! I am still going to thrust adorable photos of them upon you until you scream for mercy or melt into a puddle of goo. Today's post is all about Xanthi.

Xanthi was our first cat (well, my first cat - my husband has had many a cat through the years). We got her from a rescue organisation (which, if you are thinking about getting a pet, I would encourage you to do) and I instantly fell in love with her. This photo was taken on the first night we brought her home.

She is a feisty little girl, and she is not generally the kind of cat who will sit on your lap or come when you call, but she has her ways to show her love. Like sleeping on top of you when you fall asleep...

...or keeping you company while you laze about...

...or helping you pick mandarins off your neighbour's tree that overhangs your fence.

She can often be found hanging out in the eaves of the house...

...or on the roof...

...or in the washing basket...

...or in a box...

...or anywhere she sees fit, no matter how ridiculous.

She won't be told what to do...

...and she won't be made fun of.

All in all, she is one awesome little girl, and I love her to pieces.

Next time, you will get to meet our other cat, Charlie, who likes to be just like her big sister!

Musical Musings: Butterfly Boucher

Many years ago, I bought Butterfly Boucher's 2003 debut album, 'Flutterby', from a second hand store. I'd never heard of her, but I liked the look of her album cover, well, specifically the photo of her - she looked like an off-beat, funky kind of girl. So, five dollars later, I owned what would become one of my favourite albums, played on high rotation and well-loved. A few years later, her version of David Bowie's 'Changes' (also featuring David Bowie) was a highlight of the 'Shrek 2' soundtrack, but then she seemed to disappear. I always assumed that she had been consumed and spat out by the industry and gone off to have a regular job like the rest of us.

Fast forward to 2012. A well-known Aussie singer-songwriter, Missy Higgins, released a killer new track 'Unashamed Desire', that sounded quite different to her previous releases. I couldn't quite pinpoint it, but there was something familiar to the sound of the track. After watching the video clip on YouTube, I scrolled down the side bar and saw Butterfly Boucher's name, so I clicked on the link. She and Missy Higgins were singing another great track ('5678!') in a bedroom somewhere, while Missy played the keys and Butterfly played the guitar (watch for the cute little dance break in the bridge, they look like they are having a jolly old time). I then followed the links (gotta love a good old-fashioned 'follow the links' trek through the internet) to the official video for '5678!' and discovered that Butterfly Boucher had released a new album. Long story, I know, but I do love those little moments of fate that lead you to interesting places.

It turns out that Butterfly Boucher has, indeed, been busy since 2003. She released an album in 2009 titled 'Scary Fragile' (which was an ordeal from all accounts, due to contracts and controlling record companies), played bass for Sarah McLachlan on tour, produced an album for Missy Higgins (which included the track 'Unashamed Desire', which they wrote together) and independently released her self-titled album, which brings us up to date, so now I can get on with the review!

The album 'Butterfly Boucher' is a mixed bag. There is the aforementioned track, '5678!', and another song, 'Table for One', co-written with American singer-songwriter Katie Herzig; there is Butterfly's version of 'Unashamed Desire', co-written with Missy Higgins; there is a great track that conjures up images of grit in the city, 'The Weather', co-written with her manager Dawson Wells, which definitely references the sound of her debut album 'Flutterby'; and there are the rest of the songs written by Butterfly on her own, the cream of which are 'Warning Bell' and 'Don't Look Now'. It is probably because of this range of collaborations that there is such a tapestry of sound on this album.

For me, not every track is a winner, but this album is definitely worth a listen. Butterfly Boucher makes interesting music, songs that make you stop and think, and now that she is releasing her music independently, she is free to enjoy the process. In the end, her joy and sense of fun shine through this album - this is the music she wants to make, and I, for one, want to hear it.

You can buy the album 'Butterfly Boucher' and listen to selected tracks on Butterfly Boucher's website.

Kitsch Cool

Apologies for the length between posts. As usual, life got in the way of the things I wanted to do!

To make up for my shortcomings, I thought I'd share with you some of the best kitschy but cool items I've found. Enjoy!

This little keyboard brooch/necklace is absolutely adorable. Our friends at bRainbow are the rulers of kitsch cool, so they are your go-to guys for the best in wearable kitsch! You can buy it here.

This little strongman can open any of your bottles. Gotta love those stripy shorts and that delectable moustache! He is available from Holy Kitsch.

The Voodoo Knife Block is one of my all-time favourite kitsch kitchen items. I've been eyeing off one of these for some time now - maybe I should ask Santa to bring me one for Christmas... You can find out more about the Voodoo Knife Block here.

These fox family portraits are super kitsch and undeniably sweet. They are hand made by Ness Small at Sew Fantastic, who will make to order. You can order a set of portraits here.

How would you like these little owls dangling from your ears? I know I would! The 'It's a Hoot' hand-cast earrings are made by Little Annie Designs, and they are very affordable to boot. You can buy the earrings here, but be sure to check out all the other kitschy designs too!

Of course there are plenty of other awesome kitschy items out there, but I hope you have enjoyed this little sample. Voodoo Knife Block, here I come!

Musical Musings: Lisa Jaeggi

I have a new musical obsession - the New York songstress, Lisa Jaeggi. I have been listening to her album 'Epic Epic' on high rotation since it arrived in my mailbox last week and I have been loving every minute!

Her website describes her sound as a "blend of rootsy pop and folk", but there is also something edgy about her music. Some tracks are reminiscent of Jason Mraz, while others are like nothing I've heard before. The beats, the arrangements and the poetry of her words feel refreshing in the midst of today's same-samey music industry, but maybe I'm just a sucker for an accoustic guitar!

Highlight tracks for me are 'Menlike Gods' and 'All The Good'. Definitely worth a listen.

You can listen to 'Epic Epic' on Lisa Jaeggi's website: lisajaeggi.com
You can purchase 'Epic Epic' on Amazon: www.amazon.com/Epic-Lisa-Jaeggi/dp/B0051OJDEE

To the water...

There is something about water. It has the power to soothe me somehow, to clarify my thoughts and to make it all ok. When I am near the water, I feel centred and calm.

Today has been a day of wrongs. And today has followed a week and month of things going pear-shaped. In all of the wrongness of today, I have been reminded that it has been too long since I have been to the water. It is time.

A New Beginning

So it begins. As with all beginnings, this one is unexpected. Here I am, wrapped in a blanket on a chilly winter morning, at the beginning of Boho Green. I'm pretty good at starting things. Ideas sweep me away and I enthusiastically dive into them. But then reality sets in, life happens, and I forget.

So, here we are. When I decided to start this blog, I envisaged a space for me to share beautiful images - my own photographs and photographs I find on my travels around the web. I envisaged self-indulgent pieces of writing about all manner of things. I hope this space becomes an inspiring place to be... but only time will tell.

What do I look like? Here I am, in my felt hat, taking photos of myself in my backyard:

Who am I? I am Kelly. I sometimes define myself by my job - teacher. Sometimes I introduce myself by how I relate to someone else - wife, friend, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, cat owner. But here, I am who I want to be - bohemian, thinker, writer, photographer, observer, musician. The more I write, the more I realise how self-indulgent blogging really is! But I hope that what I write makes whoever read this blog think, and sometimes smile.
